Crime and Punishment Oklahoma Style. Can we learn to be just as tough but twice as smart? The 2008 Town Hall will focus on Oklahoma's Corrections System; discussions will include alternatives to incarceration, recidivism and reintegration, the indigent defense system, regional systems, incarcerated women, corrections financing and the politics of crime and punishment. The research team has been hard at work and the background research document is well on its way to publication. Subject matter experts have have been interviewed, a review has been done on the performance audit report recently presented to the legislature; and the document will include: an overview of Oklahoma's system, perspectives from the Attorney General, the Oklahoma legislature, jails and prisons, district attorneys and our facilities and inmates. Nomination forms for participation will be mailed and available on line soon. Remember, you can nominate yourself and others you think would be interested. You do not need to be an expert in the field; we want people who are interested in the topic, willing to learn and willing to share in the discussion. This particular issue affects all of us. It is important for those selected from the pool of nominees to participate be a demographic representation of the population of the state.Action Alert Update/Correction
There are a few corrections that
need to be noted from the Final Action Alert sent June 11, 2008. Senate Bill
1186 does not require 45 hours of physical education for seventh and eighth
graders. Additionally, SB 519 was amended in the final week of the session
to exclude language referring to "suggestions to parents to take appropriate
actions to improve students' health."
